TAB Is Getting Older – And It’s Getting Better

TELLURIDE – Every year the Telluride public asks, “How is the AIDS Benefit Fashion Show going to top last year’s show?”

This year TAB has gone L.A., bringing in a new director, Scott Grossman, and a designer and stylist, Karen Zambos, both from Los Angeles.

Also new this year: TAB Executive Director Stash Wislocki, who says, “We have a demanding audience, they always want bigger, faster and more exciting. We are always striving to keep it fresh.”

Having never before seen the venerable TAB fashion show, now in its 17th year, Grossman came in blind, charged simply with creating a show that’s “better than last year.” He quickly added about 15 models to the show, bringing the already stage-busting total to 50. And judging from this week’s eye-popping rehearsals, the man is undaunted by his task.

Director Grossman has stepped up from his past work with the Miss U.S.A and Miss Teen U.S.A. pageants – which might explain the 50 models. He has also been the head chorographer for the Miss Universe pageant for 15 years.

For TAB, Grossman has taken the theme “Out of Your Comfort Zone, Step Out of the Box” and literally run with it. Or as one model sheepishly, and anonymously confesses, “I never thought I would be doing some of these things. Not that they are over-the-top racy – just incredibly tricky.” Considering that all of the models are regular Telluride folks, (and one super hottie from Montrose), the amount of choreography and action demonstrated in each scene is amazing.

For the last three weeks, the group has rehearsed at the Peaks (who once again gave the models memberships to the gym, and, judging by the zero-percent body fat on the runway, they have been using it. Or perhaps it’s just the long, jam packed rehearsals with a perfectionist director).

“It is exciting working with locals. I am not scared of challenge, it is just a matter of adapting, looking for the best that they have to offer,” says Grossman. “I am not going make them look silly. We take what they have to give the show and embellish it.”

Via Grossman’s agent, TAB patriarch Ron Gilmer contacted the openly gay director about taking on this year’s show, and he immediately understood the significance of the opportunity. “This cause speaks to me,” he says. “I have lost many friends to this disease. When this particular epidemic was forming, there was a big scare when you were diagnosed, because it used to be a death sentence. It is still urgent to educate young men and women. We still have an epidemic on our hands. We have to make sure that people have a proper respect for and information about this disease. And coming to Telluride was a chance to continue the advocacy work I have done in my 16 years of battling this disease.”

Grossman + Zambos = A Whole New SHOW!

Recruited by TAB Boardmember Tammy Strome, designer and stylist Karen Zambos procured nearly half of the clothing for the runway this year. Her role was meant to stop there, but it quickly snowballed so that now she’s the official stylist for the entire show. Flying in from L.A., Zambos spent two days last weekend going through every outfit with each TAB model – a professional approach new to a production that previously expected its models to provide their own shoes and accessories to wear with the outfits.

“Styling a show like this has so many things that are involved, when you see so many different designers and colors,” says Zambos. “You have to work with each model’s body and what will look best on her, and what will be best to create the whole look. If a model is heavy on the bottom, obviously, no prints there. You use monochromatic colors top and bottom so they look taller. If someone has a big bust, no print and not too much fabric up there.

“The designs were all-over-the-place; there is no central theme,” she continues. “It was challenging, but the whole trip was very creative and fun.”

Director Wislocki, who participated in the marathon fittings, says, “I learned that ‘Belt It’ doesn’t mean ‘Hit It.’ Karen was amazing; she would just look at something and know exactly how to make it look perfect.”

“Belts are a very important accessory, as they accentuate the waist and, like pieces of jewelry, they make an outfit complete,” she says. She backed this up by donating over 50 belts for the show.

Zambos’s client list includes Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, and Heroes cheerleader Hayden Panettiere, along with many other A-listers. She has styled for the covers of numerous magazines, shows and red carpet events. She got her start in clothing design by reworking vintage pieces that, over the years, evolved into collections that vary from hippie-inspired to classy and elegant. More than anything, Zambos “is happily dressing confident, sexy and playful women worldwide in vintage clothing with a modern twist.”

Of Grossman’s work with TAB, Zambos says: “His ideas are just great. The show is going to be unbelievable, I mean it is going to be awesome, each scene and each designer are just so different. ”

Tickets for the Telluride AIDS Benefit Fashion Show – both the Thursday’s rehearsal and Saturday’s gala – are sold out, although some tickets are being sold on E-Bay.

Elegantly Waisted in CUSP

The Neiman Marcus Group has taken it slow rolling out the Cusp freestanding contemporary chain. Now Cusp shop-in-shops are in the works, and what better place to test the new format than in the mothership. In early March, three Cusp boutiques will open inside Neiman Marcus stores in North Park, Dallas; Atlanta, and San Francisco. It’s a sign Neiman’s remains committed to further developing the Cusp concept and believes it could elevate Neiman’s productivity and bring an extra element of differentiation.

“The Cusp shop-in-shops will be merchandised the way we merchandise our freestanding Cusp stores — by lifestyle versus vendor,” said Ginger Reeder, Neiman’s vice president and spokeswoman. “They’re highly edited and all about personal style and flair.”

“We feel like we’ve learned a lot from merchandising Cusp boutiques,” Reeder said. “Now we will see how they translate within the Neiman’s store environments. It really is a test. We still are committed to the concept of freestanding specialty stores.”
She said Cusp shops inside Neiman’s will be true shop-in-shops, ranging from 1,800 to 2,500 square feet, designed with their own character and clearly defined space, like the way designers such as Chanel and Giorgio Armani are merchandised with “hard”shops inside Neiman’s. At Neiman’s Atlanta and San Francisco, Cusp shops will be next to the contemporary ready-to-wear departments. In North Park, Cusp will be next to cosmetics.

Ready-to-wear labels in the Cusp shop-in-shops will include French Connection, Beyond Vintage, Blank Denim and Torn. Shoe brands will include Sam Edelman, Dolce Vida and Havianas. Handbags will include Foley & Corrina and Linea Pelle, while there
will be jewelry from House of Harlow, Lola Dee and Gorjana, and accessories from Love Quotes, Deepa, Gurnani and Elegantly Waisted, among other vendors.

Cusp launched in 2006 with a freestanding 9,537-square-foot shop in Tysons Corner Center in McLean, Va.

Since then Selma has turned the business over to me and it is now 5 years later and still going strong. I am still creating the cummerbund belt that was one of the originals and have moved into studded cinch belts as well as chain and faux leather. SIZE ISN'T EVERYTHING

I have been in the fashion business a long time..on the retail and wholesale end. What has always been an issue is women complaining about their size or the size of the garment they are trying on. I cannot tell you how many complaints I have heard over the years about this..."i'm fat"..."this is running small".."do you think these are mismarked?".. I am here to tell you something that might make you feel a bit better about "buying your size". Just because you are a size "6" and do not fit in a particular garment that says says "size 6" does not mean you are fat. It simply means that all designers fit and size their collection differently. It would be in your best interest to buy the garment by the fit not by the number. Sometimes garments look better worn a bit loose..so go up a size..big deal. I always buy my pants and tee shirts one size bigger for a loose fit. It is just my preference.

So next time you are out doing a little retail therapy...remember what I said...SIZE ISN'T EVERYTHING!

So I went to the viewing of the new Holmes & Yang collection at Maxfields in West Hollywood last night. I have to say I was absolutely blown away. What Jeanne and Katie created was very simple and elegant. What I viewed were mostly silk pieces that were beautifully constructed...A hammered satin silk jumpsuit to a cropped biker jacket...and many beautiful dress in between. I had a chance to speak to Katie briefly and she stated that she wanted to create quality pieces that people could wear everyday. Well Katie..you nailed it!

Trip to China

I took my first trip to China this month, landing in Hong Kong to source new fabrics for my upcoming collections...

Here we are exploring Kowloon, Hong Kong. It was typhoon season so the weather was rainy and super humid...

Behind the Scenes, Pre Spring Photo Shoot

This is a little bit of a sneak-peek at our Pre Spring Collection. The jumper shown on the model is amazing - so cute, very easy to wear, and available in some great colors.

Karen is shown above styling the model with some of her amazing vintage jewelry. The photo shoot took place Friday, July 24th, and went very well because of our great team. The whole shoot was wrapped up in under 8 hours, and we have our amazing shots already done only 4 days later!

Karen's Influences

We thought it would be interesting to discuss the influences and inspiration that went into the creation of the Karen Zambos Vintage Couture Fall 2009 Collection. Karen Zambos is constantly inspired by elements of everyday life, specifically real women and the different ways that they put together and accessorize their outfits.

For this collection (and as with her line as a whole), Karen was inspired by the easy wearability of vintage fashion-she loves the worn in, owned-forever feel of vintage clothing as well as the fact that it is often made of unique fabrics and filled with amazing patterns and colors. Karen incorporated her love of vintage and vintage inspired pieces into the fall collection.

The Fall 2009 Collection features bold prints and colors such as coral and red, yet is anchored by more traditional fall colors and fabrics. Karen incorporated different textures and fun yet wearable prints into the Fall 2009 Collection, which resulted in a fun, fresh, wearable collection. The collection includes easy dresses and silky tops which are perfect for day or night and for layering, as well as a line of cozy, oversize sweaters which will be great as the nights begin to cool down towards the end of summer. Keeping Up With Karen Zambos Vintage Couture

It has been a very busy last few weeks here at Karen Zambos Vintage Couture. Next week "Team Zambos" is heading to China for a whirlwind trip to attend meetings, visit with our distributers and manufacturers, and hopefully get in a little sightseeing. We will definitely post photos and blog about the experience! Last Friday we had a successful photo shoot for our Pre Spring collection, and everything looks amazing. The main colors of the collection are mint and coral, with some great neutrals as well. We are already excited for next spring (and this summer is not even over yet!). We will post a sneak peek photo from the shoot in the next few days. We have been extra busy sending out our orders for Fall and Holiday 2009, and there are some really amazing pieces which have been selling like crazy, such as our Nina Skirt (shown in the photo above). The clothes are making us long for fall when we can dress in cozy sweaters and soft layering pieces, as well as dress up for events and parties in the fabulous dresses and party-ready pieces from Karen Zambos Vintage Couture.
